x² + 8x - 5 = 0

a = 1, b = 8, c = -5

[tex]x = \dfrac{ -b \pm\sqrt{b^2-4ac} }{2a} [/tex]

[tex]x = \dfrac{ -8 \pm\sqrt{8^2-4(1)(-5)} }{2(1)} [/tex]

[tex]x = 0.58 \text{ or} -8.58 \text { (nearest hundredth)}[/tex]

Answer: x = 0.58 or -8.58
