Answer: after stimulating a nerve fiber, slight leakage of sodium ions to the interior of the nerve fiber occurs through sodium channels in the nerve membrane. those entering sodium ions change membrane potential, causing more opening of channels. more change of potential, still more opening of channels, and so forth.
