-3 = x^2 + 4x + 1 

Add 3 to both sides.

0 = x^2 + 4x + 4

Switch sides.

x^2 + 4x + 4 = 0

discriminant = b^2 - 4ac = 4^2 - 4(1)(4) = 16 - 16 = 0
